Loneliness and Depression in Older Adults Living in the Community During the COVID-19 Pandemic

Updated

Abstract

In a sample of 456 older adults, 41.4% reported feelings of loneliness during the COVID-19 lockdown.

  • Among those who felt lonely, 62% also screened positive for depression.
  • Loneliness was significantly linked to being unmarried, never having worked, and being functionally dependent.
  • Lonely participants were 1.65 times more likely to experience depression.
  • A previous history of depression, cognitive impairment, multimorbidity, poor self-perceived health, and fear of contracting COVID-19 were significant predictors of depression.
