Long COVID and Food Shortages in US Adults, 2022-2023

Updated

Abstract

Among 21,631 participants, 15% with food insecurity reported current long COVID symptoms.

  • Food insecurity was linked to higher odds of experiencing long COVID symptoms lasting 3 or more months.
  • 288 individuals with food insecurity reported current long COVID compared to 1547 without food insecurity.
  • Food insecurity was also associated with lower chances of recovery from long COVID.
  • Participation in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and unemployment affected the relationship between food insecurity and long COVID.
  • Improving SNAP access and promoting food assistance programs could help reduce the impact of food insecurity and long COVID.
