Lotus seed starch and chlorogenic acid together may ease long-term gut inflammation and related thinking problems by changing gut bacteria through gut-brain interaction
Updated
Abstract
A dosage of 2 g/kg of lotus seed starch-chlorogenic acid complexes significantly alleviated symptoms of chronic colitis in mice.
- The treatment improved disease activity, colon length, and tissue damage in chronic colitis models.
- 2 g/kg A-LS-CA reduced levels of inflammatory markers TNF-α, IL-6, IL-1β, NF-κB, and TLR4 in colon tissue.
- The same dosage enhanced the levels of ZO-1 and Claudin-1, indicating improved intestinal barrier function.
- A-LS-CA altered the gut microbiota composition and increased production of beneficial metabolites like short-chain fatty acids and tryptamine.
- The findings suggest a potential link between the gut microbiota and cognitive health in the context of chronic colitis.
