How LSD1 changes ATM to promote cell aging and organ decline

Lysine-specific demethylase 1 (LSD1) was found to be upregulated in aged organs and senescent cells.

  • LSD1 interacts with and modifies the ATM protein in response to DNA damage.
  • This modification enhances ATM phosphorylation, which may promote DNA damage signaling and senescence.
  • Inhibiting LSD1 could lead to increased DNA repair and reduced senescence.
  • Elimination of senescent cells resulted in decreased LSD1 levels in aged organs, suggesting a feedback loop.
  • LSD1 accumulation in senescent cells is linked to impaired autophagy during DNA damage.
