Lycium barbarum polysaccharides may reduce fat buildup and aging caused by a high-fat diet by activating fat recycling in cells

Abstract

Hyperlipidemia may induce meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) through lipid accumulation and impaired autophagy.

  • A high-fat diet (HFD) led to lipid buildup and inhibited cellular cleanup processes in mouse meibomian glands.
  • Similar effects were observed in human meibomian gland epithelial cells exposed to oleic acid.
  • Administration of Lycium barbarum polysaccharides (LBP) improved autophagy and reduced lipid accumulation in these cells.
  • LBP's protective effects were diminished when an autophagy inhibitor was applied, indicating its role in enhancing cellular cleanup.
  • LBP may alleviate lipid buildup by promoting lipophagy through the AMPK pathway.
