Maternal Caffeine During Pregnancy and Its Effects on Behavior, Sugar Processing, and Biological Clocks in Baby Rats

Updated

Abstract

A significant reduction in maternal weight gain was observed in the 80 mg/kg caffeine group compared to controls.

  • Caffeine exposure during gestation is associated with slower postnatal weight gain in offspring.
  • Elevated spontaneous activity and increased anxiety-like behaviors were noted in offspring exposed to caffeine.
  • Impaired glucose tolerance was specifically observed in female offspring following maternal caffeine exposure.
  • No significant changes were detected in insulin sensitivity or spatial learning and memory performance in offspring.
  • Maternal caffeine consumption disrupted the normal rhythmicity of circadian clock gene expression in offspring.
