Mother's daily body clock influences immune development in offspring

Updated

Abstract

High basal expression of the irg-5 immune marker in offspring is associated with increased susceptibility to infection.

  • Offspring with high basal irg-5 expression before infection were more vulnerable to Pseudomonas aeruginosa PA14.
  • Maternal circadian rhythms influenced the proportion of offspring entering the high basal irg-5 state.
  • High-irg-5 mothers produced more high-irg-5 offspring than low-irg-5 mothers.
  • Knockdown of the nhr-23 gene disrupted the rhythmic oscillation of the high basal irg-5 state.
  • The findings suggest that maternal environmental cues may create immune heterogeneity in offspring.
