Changes in mother’s milk fat caused by early separation relate to gut bacteria and serotonin genes in newborn mice

Abstract

Maternal separation resulted in elevated myristic acid and ethanolamine levels in breast milk.

  • Alterations in breast milk composition due to maternal separation may influence offspring gut microbiota and metabolic profiles.
  • Offspring of mothers subjected to separation showed reduced abundance of A. muciniphila in the gut.
  • Changes in cecal contents included increased myristic acid and decreased inosine levels in the offspring.
  • Lower serum inosine levels were observed in the offspring of separated mothers.
  • Expression of serotonin-related genes Tph2 and Htr1b was reduced in the prefrontal cortex of these offspring.
  • Supplementation with myristic acid in neonatal pups was linked to decreased levels of A. muciniphila.

R04-105). The study was conducted according to the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals and in accordance with the ARRIVE guidelines. Animals were monitored daily for abnormal clinical signs, posture, behavior, grooming, or adverse reactions at injection sites; no animals reached humane endpoints during the study.
