How maternal smoking and breastfeeding may influence the risk of mental health disorders

Abstract

Maternal smoking around birth is associated with an increased risk of ADHD (odds ratio = 5.36) and major depressive disorder (odds ratio = 1.92).

  • Maternal smoking around birth is linked to a higher risk of bipolar disorder (odds ratio = 6.33) and anxiety disorders (odds ratio = 1.03).
  • No significant associations were found between maternal smoking and Autism Spectrum Disorder or Schizophrenia.
  • Breastfeeding during infancy may protect against ADHD (odds ratio = 0.17), major depressive disorder (odds ratio = 0.26), and anxiety disorders (odds ratio = 0.96).
  • No significant protective effects of breastfeeding were observed for Autism Spectrum Disorder, bipolar disorder, or Schizophrenia.
