MDMA-Assisted Therapy and Clinical Results for Veterans with Both PTSD and Alcohol Use Disorder in an Initial Open-Label Trial

Updated

Abstract

Co-occurring posttraumatic stress disorder and alcohol use disorder affects a significant number of U.S. Veterans.

  • PTSD-AUD is associated with greater symptom severity compared to having either disorder alone.
  • Functional impairment is more pronounced in veterans with both PTSD and AUD.
  • Outcomes for veterans with PTSD-AUD are generally poorer than for those with only one of the disorders.
  • Current treatments show only modest effectiveness in addressing these co-occurring conditions.
  • Challenges remain in engaging and retaining patients in treatment for PTSD-AUD.
