Identification and description of light-sensitive proteins in reptile eye and brain light-detecting areas

Updated

Abstract

Full-length cDNA cloning of ruin lizard melanopsin and pinopsin was achieved.

  • Both melanopsin and pinopsin show high identity with other opsins in critical regions, suggesting they could form stable photopigments.
  • Phylogenetic analysis places these opsins on the expected branches of ortholog sequences.
  • Expression of melanopsin was confirmed in the lateral eye and all major brain regions but not in the pineal gland.
  • Pinopsin mRNA was only detected in the pineal complex.
  • These findings may enhance understanding of the evolution of light detection in reptiles.
