Melatonin’s effects on reducing fatigue, anxiety, and depression from radiotherapy in breast cancer patients

Updated

Abstract

In a meta-analysis of five randomized controlled trials involving 561 breast cancer patients, melatonin significantly reduced fatigue severity and improved cognitive functioning and global health status.

  • Melatonin supplementation was associated with a reduction in fatigue severity (SMD = -0.43; 95% CI -0.65 to -0.20; p = 0.0002).
  • Improvements in cognitive functioning were observed with melatonin (MD = 1.16; 95% CI 0.95 to 1.36; p < 0.00001).
  • Global health status was also enhanced by melatonin supplementation (MD = 2.47; 95% CI 2.07 to 2.87; p < 0.00001).
  • No significant effects were found on emotional, social, or physical functioning, nor on gastrointestinal, pain, or sleep-related issues.
  • Melatonin appears to be a safe and well-tolerated adjunct to radiotherapy, but the findings are based on a limited number of studies.
