Molecular and treatment effects of tiny particles from stem cells on autoimmune diseases

Abstract

Mesenchymal stem cell-derived exosomes (MSC-Exos) may provide a novel therapeutic approach to autoimmune diseases.

  • MSC-Exos are nano-sized extracellular vesicles that contain proteins, lipids, and nucleic acids.
  • These exosomes exhibit anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory effects, enhancing regulatory T cell populations.
  • MSC-Exos can modulate macrophage activity and suppress proinflammatory cytokines like interleukin-6 and tumor necrosis factor-α.
  • In Behçet's disease, MSC-Exos have been shown to regulate vasculitis and inflammatory processes.
  • The therapeutic effects of MSC-Exos may extend to various autoimmune diseases, including systemic lupus erythematosus, rheumatoid arthritis, and multiple sclerosis.
