Health problems in children linked to mothers with pregnancy-related diabetes: a combined study

Updated

Abstract

Offspring exposed to gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) have significantly elevated risks of chronic diseases, including obesity and diabetes.

  • The odds of obesity and overweight in offspring exposed to GDM is 1.57 times higher compared to those not exposed.
  • Offspring of mothers with GDM have an increased risk of developing diabetes, with an odds ratio of 4.50.
  • There is a 38% higher likelihood of autism spectrum disorder in children exposed to GDM (OR = 1.38).
  • Intellectual disabilities are 70% more common in offspring of mothers with GDM (OR = 1.70).
  • Higher systolic and diastolic blood pressure levels were observed in children exposed to GDM, with mean differences of 2.33 mmHg and 0.53 mmHg, respectively.
  • Significant increases in body mass index (BMI), triglyceride levels, and LDL cholesterol levels were noted in offspring exposed to GDM.
