How common fatty liver linked to metabolism is in type 1 diabetes and what predicts it

Abstract

The prevalence of hepatic steatosis and fibrosis in individuals with type 1 diabetes is 9.5% and 3.5%, respectively.

  • Hepatic steatosis and fibrosis were assessed using vibration-controlled transient elastography in 453 individuals with type 1 diabetes.
  • Individuals with higher liver stiffness measurements tended to have a longer duration of type 1 diabetes, older age, higher body mass index, and higher controlled attenuation parameter scores.
  • The most significant predictors of fibrosis severity were the duration of type 1 diabetes, age, and systolic blood pressure, with an area under the curve of 0.73 ± 0.03.
