Metabolism problems in long-term critical illness: causes, effects, and possible treatments

Updated

Abstract

Patients with chronic critical illness (CCI) may exhibit persistent metabolic inflexibility and impaired recovery.

  • CCI is associated with ongoing catabolic processes, inflammation, and poor long-term health outcomes.
  • Evidence indicates impaired transitions from catabolism to anabolism and mitochondrial dysfunction in CCI patients.
  • Altered autophagy and substrate utilization, including reduced ketone production, are observed in these patients.
  • These metabolic changes may contribute to muscle wasting, immune dysfunction, and delayed recovery.
  • Much of the data supporting these findings comes from studies conducted in preclinical or acute settings.
