Metabolic syndrome in football linemen

Abstract

Of the 70 football linemen evaluated, 34 were identified as having metabolic syndrome.

  • Assessment included measurements of blood pressure, waist circumference, and fasting glucose levels.
  • The mean total cholesterol-to-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio was 4.95, with 32 participants exceeding a value of 5.0.
  • Twelve athletes had total cholesterol levels above 200 mmol/L.
  • Fifteen participants exhibited elevated levels of C-reactive protein.
  • Nine athletes had slightly elevated levels of glycosylated hemoglobin.
