Unpredictable chronic stress in zebrafish disrupted behavior, inflammatory and stress markers, and brain-intestinal metabolites consistent with gut-brain axis changes.

Evidence

In a 14-day zebrafish stress model, behavioral tests, whole-body cortisol and IL-1β, and NMR metabolomics of brain and intestinal tissue showed increased immobility, impaired social interaction, elevated markers, and altered amino-acid-related metabolites.

Caveat

The findings come from a zebrafish model using behavior and tissue metabolites as proxies, not direct evidence of human depression mechanisms.
