How gut-related choline processing affects the sense of smell

Abstract

TMAO is particularly enriched in the murine olfactory bulb.

  • Gut microbes can convert choline into trimethylamine (TMA), which is then converted to trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO).
  • Inhibiting the gut microbe-driven conversion of choline reduces TMAO levels.
  • Altered TMAO production impacts olfactory perception in mice.
  • The findings suggest a significant role for the TMAO pathway in behaviors related to the sense of smell.
