Metformin's effects on blood gene activity in older adults with age-related vision loss

Updated

Abstract

Fifteen patients participated in a randomized trial examining the effects of metformin on blood gene expression.

  • No individual gene showed a statistically significant difference between the metformin and control groups after adjusting for multiple comparisons.
  • Pathway analysis revealed downregulation of interferon α/β signaling, cell junction organization, and epithelial mesenchymal transition pathways in the metformin group.
  • Metformin may be associated with the inhibition of upstream proinflammatory molecules and activation of anti-inflammatory molecules.
  • Findings suggest potential modulation of 'inflammaging' and other biological processes by metformin, requiring further validation in larger studies.
