Abnormalities in the gut-brain system in people who chew betel quid

Abstract

Chronic betel quid (BQ) chewing is associated with significant gut microbiome alterations and reduced spontaneous brain activity in the limbic lobe.

  • BQ chewers showed reduced microbial diversity and an increase in pro-inflammatory bacterial genera.
  • Beneficial microbial taxa were found to be depleted in individuals who chew BQ.
  • Altered metabolic potential, indicated by changes in carbohydrate-active enzyme profiles, was observed in BQ chewers.
  • A significant reduction in amplitude of low-frequency fluctuations (ALFF) was noted in the limbic lobe of BQ chewers.
  • Positive correlation was found between Streptococcus abundance and limbic ALFF, while Dorea formicigenerans showed a negative correlation.
