Gut bacteria and brain communication linked to treatment resistance in epilepsy

Updated

Abstract

Essence

The CARE study will test whether gut microbiota and blood DNA methylation patterns predict treatment response in people with epilepsy across several therapies.

Evidence

This multicentre prospective longitudinal protocol will follow participants aged 3-50 years in four epilepsy treatment cohorts over 12 months, combining clinical measures with stool metagenomics and metaproteomics and blood methylation profiling to identify biomarkers linked to seizure-count reduction.

Caveat

This is a study protocol, so it reports no outcome data yet and any predictive microbiota or methylation signatures remain unproven.
