Abstract

Approximately 65 key studies were analyzed to explore the role of the gut microbiota in health and disease.

  • A balanced gut microbiota, known as eubiosis, is linked to the production of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), which help maintain intestinal barrier integrity and regulate immune responses.
  • Dysbiosis, characterized by reduced microbial diversity and higher levels of pro-inflammatory species, is associated with chronic low-grade inflammation, referred to as inflammaging.
  • Changes in gut microbiota with age may activate inflammatory processes and disrupt immune regulation, potentially increasing the risk of various diseases.
  • Alterations in the microbiota are recognized as significant factors in the development of conditions such as neurodegenerative diseases, cardiovascular diseases, type 2 diabetes mellitus, and osteoporosis.
  • Microbiome-targeted interventions, including probiotics and dietary changes, particularly the Mediterranean diet, may offer strategies to restore microbial balance and reduce inflammaging.
