Using tiny fluid channels to control mRNA vaccine particles boosts protein production and vaccine strength

Updated

Abstract

The microfluidics-based method MIMAC enhances cellular delivery by restructuring lipid nanoparticles, leading to an increase in ATP levels up to 4.2-fold.

  • The method enables early release of metabolic RNA, which may enhance translation of therapeutic RNA.
  • Structured lipid nanoparticles improved a human papillomavirus cancer vaccine, suppressing tumor growth by 89.2%.
  • In a mouse model, the technique increased survival rates associated with cancer treatment.
  • SARS-CoV-2 vaccines produced using this method boosted antibody levels by 62.3- to 174.8-fold while using only one-tenth of the typical dose.
  • A benchtop device can produce 200 doses per hour, indicating potential for scalable application.
