Microplastics may change gut bacteria and affect metabolism and immune response

Updated

Abstract

Microplastics (MPs) may reduce microbial diversity and impair intestinal barrier integrity.

  • MP exposure is associated with shifts in the abundance of key bacterial taxa.
  • Changes in microbial composition may increase intestinal permeability.
  • Higher intestinal permeability could facilitate the translocation of bacterial products, activating inflammatory pathways.
  • Dysbiosis related to MPs may alter the production of short-chain fatty acids and other metabolites.
  • These alterations are linked to insulin resistance and other metabolic disturbances.
  • Current evidence primarily comes from animal and in vitro studies, with limited insights into human health.
