Using microRNA to predict the risk of cancer spread in breast cancer patients

Updated

Abstract

Eight differentially expressed miRNAs were identified in a discovery cohort of 34 breast cancer patients.

  • miR-3916 expression was associated with a reduced risk of metastasis (odds ratio = 0.42).
  • Higher levels of miR-3613-5p were linked to an increased risk of developing metastases (odds ratio = 2.06).
  • Incorporating miR-3916 and miR-3613-5p into a predictive model improved risk discrimination (AUC = 0.85).
  • The model was effective across all breast cancer subtypes.
  • miR-3613-5p was more abundant in tumor extracellular vesicles compared to benign lesions.
  • In silico analyses suggest miR-3613-5p and miR-3916 play roles in processes related to metastasis, such as cell plasticity and DNA damage response.
