Smallest meaningful change in shuttle walk test for long COVID rehabilitation

Abstract

The minimum important difference (MID) for the incremental shuttle walk test (ISWT) in individuals with long covid is estimated to be between 35 and 60.7 meters.

  • 397 participants with long covid completed a 6-week rehabilitation program and reported perceived change using the Global Rating of Change Scale (GRCS).
  • Participants reporting slight improvement in their condition increased their ISWT distance by an average of 60.7 ± 85.9 meters.
  • Change in ISWT distance varied significantly across GRCS categories (p<0.05).
  • Receiver operating characteristic analysis identified an optimal cut-off of 35 meters for meaningful change, with an area under the curve of 0.70.
  • Distribution-based methods provided MID estimates of 40.1 meters and 52.5 meters, reinforcing the range of 35-60.7 meters.
