Lower levels of MiR-31 increase LATS2 through the hippo pathway and encourage cell changes linked to esophageal cancer growth

Abstract

LATS2 expression is elevated by down-regulation of miR-31 in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC).

  • MiR-31 may function as an oncogene in ESCC by suppressing LATS2, a component of the Hippo tumor-suppressive signaling pathway.
  • Silencing miR-31 significantly inhibited cell proliferation, induced apoptosis, and decreased migration and invasion abilities in ESCC cells.
  • Elevated expression of TAZ was associated with a high risk of recurrence and poorer survival outcomes in ESCC patients.
  • LATS2 may act to impede ESCC cell proliferation and invasion by regulating miR-31 levels.
  • The regulation of LATS2 by miR-31 could inform potential prognostic markers for ESCC.
