How Mitochondrial Problems Cause Inflammation and Beta-Cell Death in Type 2 Diabetes: Mechanisms and Treatment Ideas

Updated

Abstract

Mitochondrial dysfunction is associated with various mechanisms contributing to Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM).

  • Chronic hyperglycemia and insulin resistance are key features of T2DM.
  • Excessive production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) may lead to metabolic stress and cell death in insulin-producing β-cells.
  • Mitochondrial dysfunction could trigger inflammatory responses, including activation of NLRP3 inflammasomes and cytokine release.
  • Impaired mitochondrial processes may contribute to the development of diabetic complications such as neuropathy and nephropathy.
  • New treatments targeting mitochondrial integrity and apoptotic signaling may enhance therapeutic outcomes.
  • Personalized medicine strategies utilizing mitochondrial profiling may improve treatment effectiveness for T2DM.
