Nanoceria particles protect mitochondria to reduce oxidative damage in light-related eye cell loss

Abstract

A single injection of Cerium-Oxide Nanoparticles (CeO2-NPs) can counteract retinal degeneration in a light-induced injury model.

  • Light-induced retinal injury is linked to decreased activity of genes related to mitochondrial function.
  • CeO2-NPs treatment restored the expression of genes involved in antioxidant defense and mitochondrial generation.
  • Electron microscopy showed that CeO2-NPs preserved the structure of mitochondria in Retinal Pigmented Epithelial cells.
  • CeO2-NPs were found close to mitochondria, suggesting a localized effect on mitochondrial health.
  • Western blot analysis indicated that CeO2-NPs kept markers of mitophagy at normal levels, preventing excessive mitochondrial cleanup.
