Mitochondria quality control during cadmium brain poisoning: helpful cleanup, uneven removal, and blocked processing

Updated

Abstract

Cadmium exposure is associated with disrupted mitochondrial quality-control processes in neural systems.

  • Three states of mitochondrial quality control are proposed: adaptive clearance, disproportionate mitochondrial elimination, and stalled flux.
  • Protective activity of PINK1 and BNIP3L has been supported by evidence of loss-of-function.
  • Evidence indicates that cadmium disrupts various cellular processes, including autophagosome-lysosome fusion and lysosomal integrity.
  • Puerarin shows the broadest checkpoint coverage among examined compounds, linking reduced cadmium burden to improved mitochondrial processing.
  • Evidence for daidzein remains limited, while Rg1 offers protection without a defined mechanism for mitochondrial quality control.
