Mitochondria keep working despite stress and lower numbers after 10 days of bed rest in older adults

Abstract

Ten days of bed rest increased mitochondrial reactive oxygen species (ROS) emission in older adults.

  • Mitochondrial mass decreased, as evidenced by reduced mitochondrial volume density.
  • Despite increased ROS production, oxidative phosphorylation capacity remained preserved.
  • A significant number of genes (>3000) showed differential expression, particularly in oxidative phosphorylation, mitophagy, and antioxidant pathways.
  • Phosphorylation of dynamin-like protein 1 (DRP1) at serine 637 was reduced, while levels of other fission and fusion proteins remained unchanged.
  • Mitochondrial morphology did not show alterations during the period of inactivity.
