Molecular Changes and Sex Differences in Gene Control During Multi-Year Dormancy of the Cabbage Beetle

Updated

Abstract

Diapause in the cabbage beetle Colaphellus bowringi can last up to 5 years with significant variation among individuals.

  • Extended diapause is associated with a coordinated suppression of energy-intensive metabolic processes.
  • Increased expression of genes involved in cellular protection, such as antioxidant defense and detoxification, is observed during prolonged diapause.
  • Females exhibit higher numbers of differentially expressed genes compared to males during matched diapause durations.
  • Males show greater transcriptional changes related to signaling and physiological homeostasis as diapause duration increases.
  • Activation of pathways related to glutathione metabolism, autophagy, and immune response is sustained throughout diapause.
