Future possibilities for studying tuberculosis using molecular tracking methods

Updated

Abstract

Variable numbers of tandem repeats (VNTR) analysis is now the first-line genotyping method for Mycobacterium tuberculosis.

  • The introduction of VNTR analysis offers a rapid, specific, and easy method for differentiating M. tuberculosis strains.
  • VNTR analysis can generate digit-based data, facilitating comparison across studies and laboratories.
  • The JATA (15)-VNTR system was developed to improve discrimination power and is comparable to IS6110 RFLP analysis.
  • Molecular epidemiology of M. tuberculosis is expanding from transmission studies to include evolution and phylogeographic distribution.
  • VNTR analysis has clinical applications, enabling rapid differentiation of strains, including multidrug-resistant forms, to guide treatment decisions.
