Abstract
Konjac glucomannan (KGM) with a molecular weight of 823.4 kDa was partially degraded, resulting in two hydrolyzed fractions, KGM-M-1 and KGM-M-2.
- KGM-M-1 (147.2 kDa) and KGM-M-2 (21.5 kDa) were characterized and tested in mice.
- Both KGM-M-1 and KGM-M-2 significantly increased levels of short chain fatty acids (SCFAs) in the colonic contents.
- Native KGM increased SCFAs in the cecum, possibly due to its high viscosity affecting intestinal movement.
- Lower molecular weight fractions KGM-M-1 and KGM-M-2 could be more easily fermented by colonic bacteria.
