Abstract
High-glycemic dietary exposure may influence acne vulgaris and seborrheic dermatitis through various metabolic pathways.
- In acne, high glycemic index or load could promote hyperinsulinemia and activate several signaling pathways associated with inflammation and altered skin lipid production.
- Observational studies and small randomized trials suggest a biologically plausible link between high glycemic exposure and acne pathology, but clinical dietary trials show inconsistent results.
- Emerging data indicate that glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists may alter metabolic signaling in inflammatory follicular diseases, although this evidence is preliminary.
- For seborrheic dermatitis, established factors include interactions with Malassezia, sebaceous lipids, and inflammatory signaling, but direct links to dietary glycemic exposure are lacking.
- Available evidence suggests that dietary and metabolic factors may modify these disorders rather than act as uniform causes.
