NPJ vaccines

Single- and multiple-target OspA mRNA vaccines produce protective antibodies against Lyme disease bacteria in mice

Updated

Abstract

Essence

OspA mRNA-LNP vaccines generated functional anti-Borrelia antibodies and protected mice from tick-mediated infection.

Evidence

This preclinical vaccine study used structural and antibody-binding assays, mouse immunization, in vitro agglutination and borreliacidal tests, and tick-mediated B. burgdorferi challenge with monovalent ST1 and heptavalent OspA mRNA-LNP formulations.

Caveat

Protection was shown in mice, while the monovalent and heptavalent vaccines are only described as entering Phase 1 human testing.
