Changes in mood, sexual feelings, and close relationships after starting hormone-blocking therapy: what couples may experience

Abstract

Patients on androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) experience significant declines in sexual function, sexual frequency, and relational intimacy within the first 6 months.

  • Sexual bother increased within the first 3 months of ADT.
  • No changes in mood were observed during the study period.
  • Higher patient and partner ratings of emotional intimacy were associated with better understanding of the patient's mood state.
  • Increased sexual activity correlated with higher ratings of sexual intimacy from both patients and partners.
