Link Between Mood Swings and Irritable Bowel Syndrome

Updated

Abstract

Essence

Mood swings and irritable bowel syndrome appear to share genetic architecture and may influence each other bidirectionally.

Evidence

A human genomics study using GWAS, genetic correlation methods, Mendelian randomization, and cond/conjFDR identified global and local correlations, bidirectional causal signals, 21 shared risk loci, and 11 shared brain-tissue sites.

Caveat

These are statistical genetics findings, so mechanism and causality remain indirect despite the Mendelian randomization analyses.
