Death Rates in People with Autism or ADHD: A Review and Combined Analysis

Updated

Abstract

All-cause mortality is higher for individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) compared to the general population.

  • Individuals with ASD had a mortality rate ratio (RR) of 2.37, indicating more than double the risk of death compared to the general population.
  • Among those with ASD, deaths from natural causes showed a significantly increased risk (RR, 3.80), while deaths from unnatural causes were also elevated (RR, 2.50).
  • For individuals with ADHD, the all-cause mortality rate was 2.13 times higher than the general population.
  • Deaths from unnatural causes in individuals with ADHD were notably increased (RR, 2.81), but deaths from natural causes did not show a significant increase (RR, 1.62).
  • The findings highlight substantial variation in mortality risk across studies, which requires further investigation.
