Moxibustion on the body's central energy pathway may regulate cell survival signals and boost cell cleanup in Alzheimer's disease mice

Updated

Abstract

Moxibustion significantly reduced the levels of amyloid β-peptide (Aβ) in the brains of APP/PS1 double-transgenic mice with Alzheimer's disease.

  • The model group showed increased levels of Aβ in the cerebral cortex and hippocampus compared to the control group (<0.01).
  • Moxibustion, rapamycin, and their combination reduced Aβ levels in the cerebral cortex and hippocampus compared to the model group (all <0.01).
  • No significant difference in Aβ levels was observed between the moxibustion and rapamycin groups (>0.05).
  • The moxibustion group exhibited increased autophagic vacuoles, while the combination group showed fewer autophagic vacuoles and additional organelle deformation.
  • PI3K, Akt, p-Akt, mTOR, and p-mTOR levels were elevated in the model group compared to the control group (all <0.01).
  • Moxibustion and rapamycin reduced these signaling pathway levels, whereas the combination group showed increased levels compared to the moxibustion group (all <0.01).
