Coverage and effectiveness of mRNA COVID-19 vaccines in US veterans

Abstract

Among 6,647,733 veterans, 21% received at least one COVID-19 vaccination by March 7, 2021.

  • COVID-19 vaccine effectiveness (VE) against infection was estimated at 95% for fully vaccinated individuals and 64% for partially vaccinated individuals.
  • VE against COVID-19-related hospitalization for fully vaccinated veterans was 91%, with no deaths reported among this group.
  • Vaccine effectiveness against infection showed consistency across various racial and ethnic subpopulations.
  • For non-Hispanic Black veterans, VE was 94%; for Hispanic veterans, it was 83%; and for non-Hispanic White veterans, it was 92%.
