mRNA vaccine producing virus-like particles triggers strong neutralizing antibodies and protects against enterovirus D68 infection

Updated

Abstract

Essence

An mRNA vaccine encoding EV-D68 virus-like particles may protect against EV-D68 infection and paralysis.

Evidence

This preclinical vaccine study found neutralizing antibodies in blood and respiratory tract, protection after intranasal EV-D68 challenge, paralysis prevention by antisera in neonatal mice, and CD8 T cell-linked attenuation of CVB3 infection.

Caveat

The evidence comes from mouse and antisera experiments, so human protection, durability, and cross-enterovirus breadth are unknown.
