Melatonin’s role in reducing stress hormone production in primate adrenal glands

Updated

Abstract

Melatonin receptors in the capuchin monkey adrenal cortex have a dissociation constant of 96.9 +/- 15 pM.

  • Melatonin binding sites were identified in the adrenal cortex of capuchin monkeys.
  • Low concentrations of melatonin significantly inhibited cortisol production stimulated by ACTH.
  • The inhibitory effect of melatonin on cortisol production was reversed by luzindole, a melatonin antagonist.
  • Melatonin also reduced cortisol production stimulated by a compound that activates a specific signaling pathway, indicating an alternative mechanism of action.
