Mulberry leaf compounds lower blood sugar by affecting insulin signaling in type 2 diabetic rats

Abstract

Purity levels of 1-deoxynojirimycin, flavonoids, and polysaccharides in mulberry leaf extracts were 70.40%, 52.34%, and 32.60%, respectively.

  • Mulberry leaf multi-components (MMC) significantly reduced serum glucose, insulin, and lipid levels in diabetic rats.
  • MMC enhanced insulin sensitivity and alleviated inflammatory and oxidative damage by lowering adipocytokine levels and increasing anti-oxidative enzyme activity.
  • Insulin resistance was mitigated in diabetic rats treated with MMC.
  • MMC activated the expression of key proteins involved in glucose metabolism, including PI-3K, Akt, PDX-1, and GLUT4.
  • The study indicates that MMC may improve hepatic glucolipid metabolism disorders in T2DM rats.
