mRNA and protein vaccines using multiple targets protect mice from Toxoplasma gondii

Abstract

The T-SGR mRNA-LNP vaccine provided 100% protection against the T. gondii ME49 strain in mice.

  • Both T-SGR mRNA and protein vaccines induced robust immune responses in C57BL/6 mice.
  • The mRNA-LNP vaccine resulted in significantly higher IgG antibody levels compared to the protein vaccine (P < 0.05).
  • A Th1-biased immune response was observed, indicated by higher levels of IgG2a relative to IgG1 for both vaccines.
  • Both vaccines significantly promoted splenocyte proliferation when compared to the control group (P < 0.05).
  • The mRNA vaccine led to greater secretion of key immune signaling molecules compared to the protein vaccine.
  • Both vaccine types demonstrated significant protective effects against T. gondii infection and improved survival rates in mice.
