Exercise Program That Reverses Frailty and Improves Thinking, Mood, and Social Life in Frail Older Adults Living at Home

Updated

Abstract

A supervised multicomponent exercise program may reverse frailty in older adults, with a number needed to treat of 3.2 for recovery.

  • The exercise program significantly improved functional measurements, including Barthel and Short Physical Performance Battery scores.
  • Cognitive and emotional health improvements were observed, with higher scores on the Mini-Mental State Examination and lower scores on the geriatric depression scale.
  • Social support metrics also improved, as indicated by higher Duke social support scores in the trained group.
  • Participants in the exercise program had fewer visits to primary care physicians compared to those in the control group.
  • The intervention is associated with significant improvements in biomarkers of frailty.
