Multiple sclerosis (MS) is associated with early vascular and metabolic alterations that may contribute to disease progression.

  • Immune responses to Epstein-Barr virus and disruptions in the blood-brain barrier may play a role in the onset of MS.
  • Alterations in lipoprotein subfractions are observed, indicating potential markers of early atherosclerosis.
  • Endothelial dysfunction could be an initiating vascular event linked to disease progression in MS.
  • Insulin sensitivity, along with chronic inflammation and oxidative damage, may drive tissue injury in MS.
  • Metabolic changes related to neuronal impairment and mitochondrial dysfunction can be detected in both affected and unaffected brain regions.
  • Reduced antioxidant capacity suggests that oxidative damage might be a contributing factor in the pathogenesis of MS.
