Abstract

The probiotic group exhibited a significant reduction in plasma phosphorylated tau 181 (pTau181) compared to placebo (p < 0.001).

  • Probiotics may help lower plasma levels of pTau181, which is associated with Alzheimer's disease pathology.
  • While glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) and neurofilament light chain (NfL) levels remained stable with probiotics, the placebo group experienced significant increases.
  • Cognitive assessments indicated that the probiotic group showed improved Clinical Dementia Rating Sum of Boxes (CDR-SB) scores, particularly in memory.
  • Participants receiving probiotics performed better in visuospatial tasks, while the placebo group demonstrated declines in constructional recall.
  • No significant differences were observed between groups in Mini-Mental State Examination, verbal memory, or executive function scores.
