Muscle-specific gene and chemical patterns show varied aging paths and changed cell communication in male mouse skeletal muscle

Updated

Abstract

A total of 1492 altered genes were identified in the tibialis anterior muscle of aged mice.

  • A core set of 83 commonly altered genes was found across three muscle types, linked to circadian rhythm, metabolism, and immune signaling.
  • Gastrocnemius muscle showed significant changes in PI3K-Akt and p53 signaling pathways.
  • Soleus muscle alterations emphasized oxidative phosphorylation and inflammatory responses.
  • Tibialis anterior exhibited the most extensive remodeling, particularly related to extracellular matrix organization and fatty acid metabolism.
  • Metabolomic analysis indicated muscle-specific changes, with gastrocnemius showing disruptions in specific metabolic pathways.
  • Age-related reorganization of intermuscular communication networks was observed, highlighting altered chemokine signaling and growth factor interactions.
